Carl Johann Baptist Wetzel was a pioneer of glass-painting in southern Germany in the nineteenth century. He was active in Stuttgart. He had attended the academy there, as well as that in Munich, for his training. From time to time, he worked at Wilhelma Castle in Stuttgart, when he was in the employ of King Wilhelm I of Württemberg. His workshop must have comprised several colleagues, only one of whom is identifiable, through his signature Kessler.

Wetzel also became known for an important handbook on stained glass: Neuestes und vollständiges Handbuch der Glasmalerei, Heilbronn, 1853.
