Born in Mönchengladbach, the artist Anton Wendling was a master’s student of Johan Thorn Prikker (1868–1932) and was one of the innovators in sacred art in the twentieth century. Just as Heinrich Campendonk (1889–1957) and Heinrich Dieckmann in Düsseldorf, Aachen and Cologne, Wendling became the founder of a school and tradition in the art of glass-painting. He designed numerous cycles of windows for churches in Germany and the USA, including that for the university church in Winona, Minnesota.
