John Thompson Campbell was born in Edinburgh and from c.1840 worked in the studio of William Wailes (1838–1914) in Newcastle upon Tyne in the north of England, becoming one of the studio’s most famous artists. In 1851, the workshop employed seventy-six people and at the time was one of the two largest such concerns in England, with Hardmans of Birmingham.
